Sneezing

Did you know that guinea pigs can sneeze? So silly, right? A guinea pig sneeze is just like a human sneeze. It even sounds the same! You may have heard cute little sneezing sounds coming from your piggie. Now you know that they are exactly that!

Sneezing is totally normal in guinea pigs. But, if you notice that your guinea pigs are sneezing very often, or they have a red, itchy, or stuffy nose, it might be time to go to the vet.

Guinea pigs don't exactly get colds or the flu the same way we do. They do have similar symptoms, though. Even though guinea pigs can't (exactly) get a fever, they can get heatstroke. But some symptoms you may encounter in a sick guinea pig are:

  • Sneezing often*
  • Red, or itchy noses
  • Red or itchy eyes (also crusty eyes)
  • Red or itchy mouths
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Not moving as much**
  • Not eating or drinking***
  • Discharge or any liquid coming from the eyes, nose, mouth or even ears
*If your piggie is sneezing more than a few (3 or 4) times a day
**Sometimes pigs are also just lazy :)
***Sometimes a guinea pig may not eat or eat less for a little bit. Just it shouldn't persist for longer than a day.

If your guinea pig is having any of these symptoms, go to vet right away! Guinea pigs often hide/try to hide their sicknesses, so the quicker you notice something and take action, the quicker your piggie can get better.
