Plastic huts vs. Cardboard Box Huts

You might use a plastic, store bought-hut for your guinea pigs. You might use a homemade, cardboard box one. You might use both of these, and, you might use neither. You could have a hut made of wood, or a hut made entirely of hay. You could have no hut, and instead, cloths or pieces of clothing/blankets to give your guinea pig a feel of protection. But so far, the most common types of huts and plastic and cardboard. They're both well and good, but is one better than the other? If yes, which one? You'll learn the answers, in this post.

Let's talk about a guinea pig reaction to each one of these huts.

To tell the truth, guinea pigs don't care what hut they have, as long as they have a hut. Sure, maybe cardboard boxes are easier for chewing and are less transparent, but still. Guinea pigs don't mind.

    Now how about price?

Store-bought, plastic huts, are about $5-$10, depending on the store. They could be more or less than that as well. Cardboard box huts cost no money at all, since they are made just from a cardboard box (you can just use Amazon boxes!) and scissors, to cut doors in the sides. You probably have both these things lying around your home right now!

    What about quality?

Plastic huts last for years, while your cardboard box will probably only last about a month (at most!) because your guinea pigs will be constantly biting it, and they might sit on top, and because a guinea pig weighs about a few pounds after a while the box will cave in. The good thing is, with cardboard box huts, you can just go down to your basement/garage and grab another one for your piggies to use!

And lastly: do they fulfill the true purpose of huts?

As you may know already, the true purpose of huts is to give your guinea pigs a feel or protection and safety, as in the wild they are often chased by animals, on the ground and in the air. Huts are a way for guinea pigs to hide and know they will be safe in a hut. Plastic huts definitely fulfill the true purpose of a hut, and so do cardboard boxes, as they are dark, have a top covering, and are spacious enough.

In conclusion, both of these types of huts are great for guinea pigs. It's really your choice whether you use one or the other, or both.

We use plastic water pipe as hut.
Our Oreo loves that but we make sure that diameter of the tube is good enough for easy movement .
