5 Ways To Keep Your Piggies Happy
Is your piggie looking a little down lately? Does he/she sleep more often than play? Are you having trouble finding ways to keep your piggies happy and excited? Then you're at the right place! You'll learn all about 5 great ways to keep your piggies happy that are easy and cool, in this post.
1. Clean your guinea pigs' cage
Guinea pigs love a fresh, clean cage! The best way to keep your guinea pig happy is to clean their cage. Of course, it may seem a little gross, but it'll be a great way to pass the time if you have nothing else to do. I recommend you clean your piggies' cage at least once a day. (We clean it twice a day).
This also can depend on the type of bedding you are using. If you are using fleece bedding, you can just clean up your guinea pig's solid waste and once a week clean out the fleece liner itself. For regular bedding, clean up the solid waste again and every 5-7 days or so change out the whole bedding and add new bedding.
Maybe your guinea pig will start popcorning happily when you clean the cage! Guinea pigs love a nice clean cage so make sure to try this tip out!
2. Hay!
All guinea pigs really love hay! You should make sure your guinea pig has access to fresh hay 24/7. If your guinea pigs' hay bin is empty you should probably fill some hay in there! Hay is great for your guinea pig as it has fiber, fresh nutrients and encourages chewing. It is your guinea pigs' main diet and a key ingredient to keeping your piggies healthy and happy!
3. New toys
Piggies really enjoy getting new toys and huts! If you can't buy a hut or toy right now, there are some easy ways you can make one by yourself with materials you have at home. Like, for a hut, just take a cardboard box and cut two doors in it with a scissor or a knife. For a toy, you can use an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll and I assure you, your guinea pig will love chewing on that!
Did you know guinea pigs teeth grow continuously throughout their lives? Wow! To keep your piggies' dental health in check, chew toys are great for guinea pigs (and other rodents) to wear down their teeth. But do not buy salt chews or sugar chews or anything with artificial flavoring in them, because those can be really bad for your guinea pig. Anything made of cardboard, wood, or newspaper is fine because your guinea pigs can digest those materials easily without problems.
4. Some time for themselves
Guinea pigs do not enjoy being picked up or touched all the time. So, if you can help it, give your guinea pigs some time to themselves. This can help reduce stress levels in guinea pigs since stress is a major cause of guinea pig deaths.
If you want, you can sit by your piggies' cage and talk to them. Tell them about anything you wish, such as how your day was and what you did. Make sure to talk in a calm, soft tone. Try not to laugh, scream, or make any other sudden loud noises. Also try not to move or make any sudden movements, as this can freak your piggie out. You can even find a book and read your guinea pig a story! 😊
5. Treats
Give your guinea pig a treat. It can be a store-bough treat, a small piece of veggie or fruit. Your piggies will devour whatever little treat you give them and will soon be wheeking for more! Make sure to not give your guinea pig more than a few treats a day, though.
