Piggie Fun Fact #3: Where are guinea pigs actually from?

A lot of you are probably thinking that guinea pigs come from Guinea or New Guinea. But that is a common guinea pig myth, and it is definitely not true. So where do guinea pigs come from? Let's go back in time for a minute...

Guinea pigs come from SOUTH AMERICA, which may seem weird. But it's true. A long time ago, explores in South America found a small guinea pig. For some reason, they assumed it had traveled from New Guinea. They decided to name the animal a guinea pig. (guinea pigs are commonly believed to be called "pigs" because their noses look like little pig snouts! Seriously, look! Adorable!).
