The Truth About Iceberg Lettuce

Only a few people know that iceberg lettuce is really bad for guinea pigs. Many, who don't know this, feed their guinea pigs iceberg lettuce, and their guinea pigs get some sicknesses and diseases. Most people don't blame it on the lettuce. But it's true. Iceberg lettuce can be really bad for your piggie, and you're going to learn why, in this post.

You probably buy iceberg lettuce to eat yourself. You probably also feed it to your piggies. You seem fine when you eat it, so how come your piggies don't? Well, iceberg lettuce is really bad for your guinea pig's stomach.  They just can't digest it properly in large amounts. Iceberg lettuce is perfectly to give if, say, the store is out of romaine lettuce, you don't have enough, or if it's gone bad. I'd rather feed my guinea pigs iceberg lettuce for the day instead of rotten romaine lettuce.

Did you know guinea pigs (and other rodents) can't throw up? Their stomachs' just don't work that way. So if your guinea pig eats something that's REALLY not good for them (in moderate to large amounts, depending on the food) they won't be able to get it out and they might get a disease.

If you have guinea pigs and have been feeding them iceberg lettuce, you should probably make the switch to romaine lettuce. You can feed them the red leaf and the green leaf type.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and that it was helpful! (Make the switch to romaine!) Make sure to subscribe and follow and see you guys next time on Trisha's Guinea Pig Adventures!
