Chillin' Guinea Pigs: 10 Common Guinea Pig Behaviors And What They Mean

Hey, so why's your guinea pig jumping up and down? And doing a nose bump with another guinea pig? Answers to these questions about guinea pigs behavior, and more, in this post.

    1. Popcorning. This is when your guinea pig jumps up and down. It means your guinea pig is very happy. Younger guinea pigs do this a lot.
    2. Nose Bumping. This is when your guinea pig presses his/her nose to another guinea pig. It means, "Hello!" in guinea pig.
    3. Standing Up. This is when your guinea pig stands up on 2 legs. It means your guinea pig is waiting for something. Our guinea pigs do this when they are waiting for food.
    4. Yawning. This means your guinea pig is sleepy.
    5. Chasing. If your guinea pig is chasing another, that means your guinea pig wants to play but the other guinea pig doesn't.
    6. Biting. Your guinea pig is mad. At you, or another guinea pig. Guinea pigs rarely bite, but when they do, it means they need to go to the bathroom but they don't want to do it on you, which they usually will. Consider this as a favor, and put your guinea pig back in the cage. It could also mean your guinea pig smells food on your hand.
    7. Hiding. Your guinea pig is scared. Do not bother it.
    8. Chilling. Your guinea pig feels comfortable. It might be sticking it's legs out, or sleeping on it's side. Or just stretching out somewhere in the cage.
    9. Sniffing. Your guinea pig feels curious, or it smells food. Sometimes one guinea pig does this to another, to find out if it ate a carrot, or a cucumber. Your guinea pig might do this to you, too.
    10. Cleaning. This can be your guinea pig licking it's paw then putting it's paw somewhere, bending over to clean their underside, biting their fur or biting their paws. This means your guinea pig is cleaning themselves. They usually do this after eating and after going to the bathroom.
