Top 5 Mistakes New Guinea Pig Owners Make
Top 5 Mistakes New Guinea Pig Owners Make
1. Buying too small of a cage. This is the biggest mistake a guinea pig owner can make. Why? Because in the wild, guinea pigs are used to having a lot of space to run around. Even if your guinea pig look small when you get it, it doesn't mean it won't grow large. A good cage size is 2ft x 4ft or 24in x 48in or about 60cm x or 121cm.
2. Not getting 2 or more. Whatever the pet store employee says to you, don't get just one guinea pig. Guinea pigs are herd animals, used to being with other guinea pigs in the wild. Getting one will mean your guinea pig will be lonely. And neither humans nor other pets can replace a guinea pig friend. Imagine if you were the only human left on planet earth. No animal would speak the same language as you. You would be lonely. That's how a guinea pig feels when left alone.
3. Thinking guinea pigs are the same as hamsters. Guinea pigs are not hamsters. They are not like hamsters either. Feed your guinea pig vegetables, and don't let them run on wheels. This damages their spine.
4. Not realizing the amount of responsibility you need to care for them. Guinea pigs are quite tough to take care of. Take that from me, a real guinea pig owner. At first, it was very hard and they sucked up most of my time. After, I got used to them and made them fit into my schedule. Regardless of what the internet says about guinea pigs, they aren't that easy to take care of.
5. Not researching or learning about them. You need to research about guinea pigs a lot before you are ready to get them. You can use my blog, search up Little Adventures on YouTube, or even just search up the word "guinea pig" and see what comes up. Make sure to never believe anything that sounds unrealistic. And double check everything you learn online, since some things might not be true. Take guinea pig quizzes, to make sure you are ready.
