Guinea Pigs: Pros and Cons

So, you want to get a guinea pig? But, well, they cost a lot... but they make great pets! Let's weigh the pros and cons in this post:

    PROS:
    1. Guinea pigs make great first pets. They make great first pets for children over 7. They are pretty easy to take care of. They are a bit harder to take care of as hamsters, but much easier than a dog or cat.
    2. Guinea pigs eat vegetables. Guinea pigs eat vegetables and fruits. You probably already have those in your house. So it won't cost much money for their food.
    3. Guinea pigs live long. Guinea pigs live about 4-8 years on average. Healthy guinea pigs can even live up to 10 years old. The oldest guinea pig was 14 years, 10.5 months old.
    4. Guinea pigs are cute. Guinea pigs are very cute and adorable! They love to be cuddled and held, and they rarely bite.
    5. Guinea pigs are crepuscular. This means they are most active during dawn and dusk. But a guinea pig will adapt to your schedule with time.

    CONS:
    1. You need to get two. You need to get two guinea pigs. In the wild, guinea pigs are herd animals, and will feel extremely lonely if they are alone. A human or other animal cannot replace a guinea pig friend.
    2. Guinea pigs are loud. Guinea pigs are sometimes quite loud. They can squeak (wheek) extremely loudly when they are hungry.
    3. Guinea pigs take up space. You need to have at least a cage that is 2 ft x 4 ft. This can take up a lot of space. And you cannot put guinea pigs in a basement or attic, even though those have the most space.
    4. Guinea pigs cost a lot. Guinea pigs, at the very least, cost $40 each. Some pet shelters even ask for more. And, you need to get two, so in the end, the guinea pigs themselves are $100. Then, you need to buy a cage, and their supplies. And don't forget about vet bills. All in all, you will end up spending a few hundred dollars on your guinea pigs in the beginning. And then about $30-$60 every month.
