Pigs and Cherries

Did you know that guinea pigs can't eat cherries? Well, they can, but it's not that good for them. What's wrong with cherries, though, you might ask? They are tasty. (I don't personally like them though... haha). Humans can eat them. Sure, they have pits, but you can remove those easily. So what's up with the small amount of cherries you can give guinea pigs? Read on for more about this seemingly harmless fruit.

You can give piggies cherries, but only one or two. Removing the pit, stem, and leaves are very important. Cherries are a good source of Vitamin C (oranges, cucumbers, peppers, and watermelon are, too) which guinea pigs can't make on their own.

A dangerous poison called cyanide exists in cherry pits, which is why it isn't good to eat them. Guinea pigs can be exposed to this toxin if they eat the cherry pits, stems or leaves. Many fruits have this poison. Peaches are an example. It's generally there in very small amounts, so it's not completely harmful, but best to be safe.
