Talking About Treats

Guinea pigs love treats. Treats are a way for them to get a quick snack during the day without giving them a full-blown meal. Of course, treats aren't really necessary. In fact, if you don't buy them for your guinea pigs, it's totally fine. So why were they invented in the first place if you could just give your guinea pigs some apple peels instead of a store-made treat?

Store-bought treats are definitely fine, but that's only if you are getting the right ones. Don't buy certain treats such as salt chews/licks (guinea pigs should not be eating salt), yogurt drops (guinea pigs cannot digest dairy products), or any treat with sugar. The best treats for guinea pigs are natural, home-baked, with fruits and/or vegetables and hay. Stuff that guinea pigs should be eating. I recommend treats from the brands Kaytee and Oxbow.

And you don't even need store-made treats as previously mentioned. You can just give your guinea pigs a small snack during the day, like some apple peels, leftover lettuce, or anything that's safe for guinea pigs, really! Just don't feed too much of a snack. Remember, it's not a full blown meal. Just a small snack to hold your piggies off till dinner :) Also, treats aren't necessary if you feed your guinea pigs 3 times in a day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We only feed our guinea pigs twice a day, breakfast and dinner.

  1. Guinea pigs can eat sugar, but only in small amounts. And only natural sugar, like the type of sugars in fruits. Feeding guinea pigs fruits high in sugar is not okay, you can though, but only a little bit. For example, feed watermelon only once every two weeks at most. And yes Trisha, you are absolutely right! :)
